Ueda is the manager of Chiroru, a bakery that Hideki used to work at. When Chii wants to get a job Hideki decides to take her there to get one. Being the happy persocon she is Chii tries to hug Ueda when she was happy, but he tells her she shouldn’t hug him.
Ueda's story of why he has such an aversion to persocons and human contact is later revealed. After Hideki left Ueda needed help so he went out to get a persocon. He chose one that was on sale because he liked it more than the others. He turned her on and fell in love with her right away. Soon after he married her, to many people's shock. Soon afterwards she started to forget things. He took her to a mechanic and he said her hard drive would have to be replaced but her memory would be lost because she was so old. Ueda didn’t want this so he didn’t do anything about it and she kept forgetting things gradually. She couldn’t even remember his name anymore. They were walking home in the rain one night and Ueda was so absorbed in his own thoughts that he started walking across a street while a truck was coming. His persocon pushed him out of the way, which caused her to be hit and destroyed, even though she shouldn’t have been able to remember protective instincts like that. When Yumi came to work with Ueda he fell in love with her, even though he was worried about the age difference. She figured out he had been married to a persocon before and thought he didn’t care about her. Hideki helped to resolve their issue with his words, and by the end of the anime/manga they are back on speaking (and perhaps loving) terms.
