As discovered through Clamp's manga "Angelic Layer" Ichirou was originally the designer of the Angelic Layer dolls, which were little dolls that could be controlled with the owner's mind and that fought battles against each other. It is assumed that after this, Ichirou moved on to making even more highly advanced human-like creations.
It is revealed that Ichirou worked in the same laboratory as Hibiya, and together they were some of the original designers of persocons. They got married, but since Hibiya couldn't have children, Ichirou decided to make her persocon children, and created the "Chobits" line. The first one he made was Freya, and then soon afterwards he made Elda, who because his and Hibiya's children. He made these persocon's special, with the ability to find the person "just for them" and to fall in love. Unforunately, Freya ended up falling in love with her "father", and when he told her that he couldn't love her in that way because he loved Hibiya, she started to fade away. After Elda took Freya's memories into her, Freya faded away and Elda requested to be put out far away from her family and lost all her memories. It is never said how long Elda was alone, as Hibiya and Ichirou lived together. However, sometime between when Freya dissapeared, and Hideki found Chii, Ichirou passes away leaving Hibiya alone.
The strange thing about Ichirou's relationship with Hibiya is that it seemed like he loved Shuuko (Misaki's mother) in Angelic Layer, but it is so very obvious that he loves Hibiya and ONLY Hibiya in Chobits (and it's very sweet as well). But then again, this is a Clamp manga, and they just love doing random crossover things.
Anime:In the anime, Ichirou died of a illness, but it is never made clear how he died in the manga.
