Hideki stands there staring at the glowing Chii and tells her he loves her. Chii says she has found the only person for her and Hideki hugs her, but then something inside her clicks and she floats up to the roof. All the persocons turn to stare at where Chii is standing and a light flashes across their eyes. A voice comes from Chii saying, “Chii found her most important person.” Dita doesn’t know what’s going on but she says she going to break it. She can’t hack into Chii so she goes up and tries to plug into her. Some wires come from Chii’s ear to hold her off but she plugs into one of them. Hideki tries to climb up onto the roof to stop Dita from destroying Chii but Jima holds him back. Jima tells Hideki that Chii is dangerous, and when she finds her special person she connects to all the persons in the world and executes some kind of program, though he doesn’t know what happens then. Dita says they were created to destroy Chii’s OS and stop all her functions. Hideki struggles to break free of Jima grasp but no avails while Dita says that persocons have no feelings and nothing happens when you fall in love with them. Hideki says he doesn’t care and Jima lets him go and disconnects Chii from Dita, taking Dita to the other rooftop with him. He tells her he wants to see Hideki and Chii’s future. Chii says Hideki’s name and seems to explode taking out all of the power in the building. Hideki sees Chii in a white world, and she says something he can’t hear and all the light goes away. When she opens her eyes it is Freya instead of Chii. All the power comes back on and the persocons all regain consciousness. Hibiya runs up on the roof wondering what has happened and why Freya is here. Freya explains that before she passed away Chii put Freya’s heart inside of her won so that she could protect her. Chii disappeared because she realized that even if the person only for her fell in love with her she couldn’t do anything because she was a persocon. Hideki said that he didn’t care that she was a persocon but Chii didn’t think that way. Freya asks Hibiya to terminate her and Chii because they were failures. Hibiya agrees and erases her data and does a system shutdown. Hideki tries to stop her but there is nothing he can. The lifeless Chii follows Hibiya inside, leaving a stricken Hideki behind. Hibiya apologizes for giving Hideki such hard times. Dita and Jima leave and Hideki apologizes to Chii for not being able to really explain happiness. He says that if Chii is there, that happiness is being with the person you love, and being separated is the most painful thing. Suddenly Chii won’t move and tears start to pour out of her blank and lifeless eyes. In picture book form Chii/Atashi tells herself she has been through many painful things and it is painful to see her most important person in pain so she hid from him. But being away from him is much more painful. Back to real life Chii says Hideki and her eyes turns into what looks like a real human eyes and she starts to glow. The picture book bunny turns into Chii and she says that her happiness in only with the person she loves. Hideki appears in front of her and she says that she is happy and runs up to give him a hug. Meanwhile Yuzuki says that she is still hearing the voice and that it is now warm and gentle and her eyes turns human like too. Both Sumomo and Kotoko have their eyes turn human also. Even Dita and Jima have their eyes turn human like. Dita freaks out saying that it’s bad and she goes to check on Jima but he gives her a hug instead and she blushes. Jima asks her “Why are you blushing? Aren’t you a persocon?” Chii and Hideki stand on top of the rooftop and Chii tells Hideki that she wants to be with him even though she is a persocon and they hug while the sun comes up. Hibiya now has a new picture with her and her husband, but also with Elda and Freya. The seasons pass and Hideki is still going to cram school with Shinbo and Shimizu, and still goes into dazes during class. Yumi is standing in front of Chiroru waiting for it to open and Ueda comes to let her in. Yuzuki brings Minoru some tea and he looks much happier than before. Chii is reading the end of last volume of “The Empty City” when Hideki comes home, and she runs to give him a hug. The last line of the picture book is “I am happy.”
