In this episode Hideki is going to take the Mogishiken, which is a test similar to the SAT’s or ACT’s given in the US. Hideki decides to take the next day off of work so he can study. The next morning Hideki attempts to study, struggling through all the subjects. The one that really gets him is English. After realizing he left his English dictionary back on the farm, Hideki takes Chii to the bookstore with him. He is about to buy a new dictionary, when he notices that Chii is looking at one of the books called “A Town Without Anyone”. Deciding to sacrifice his studying to make Chii happy, he gets the picture book. They head home and Chii starts to read the book. Shinbo comes over to wish him luck (Chii does a cute dance again), and sees that he’s not even studying. Hideki goes over to borrow Shinbo’s dictionary, meanwhile Chii continues to read the story. It presents some foreshadowing about the relationship between persocons and humans. Hideki comes back to find Chii floating, glowing, and making a buzzing noise. When he touches her she returns to normal, and doesn’t seem to realize anything happened. Shinbo can’t find anything wrong with her either. Hideki then realizes he hasn’t been studying and freaks out. Chii offers encouragement, and Hideki actually doesn’t do too badly on the test.
