There is a series of books Chii reads all trough the series called “The Empty City” (or "The Town Where No One Was"). They are about a rabbit-like creature named Atashi (Atashi means I, and that is all the bunny refers to itself as) that is looking for it’s one and only. All the cities Atashi visits are empty because all the people are with “that”.
Wait a minute, one and only? That? Huh? Yeah the series is a little bit confusing for a children’s book. Actually the series has a whole lot of deeper meaning, and the world inside the books very much resembles the Chobits world, in that all the people are with that (in other words persocons) and do not care for other humans anymore.
Also Atashi search seems as if it’s based on Chii. For Atashi has a Dark Atashi as Chii has a Dark Chii. It provides the only insight we have into Chii’s past, and these books may help Chii recover her memory. In fact, Dark Chii first appears when Chii is reading The Empty City and comments once that the books are about her and Chii and their past. The books seem to be trying to show the true meaning behind Chobits.

The Empty City

Atashi travels the empty streets of a city, she looks inside the windows to see all the people with “those”. It’s much more fun to be with “those” than other people. Atashi wishes for a person of her own as she travels to the next empty city.
My One and Only
first shown: Chapter 16
Being with “those” is like being in a dream, because “those” can do everything except be a person. As Atashi wishes for a person that will love her for her, Dark Atashi appears and questions if a person like that exists, only making Atashi’s belief stronger that she will find her one and only.
Although Can do Everything
first shown: Chapter 31
“Those” are born to make people happy, but is “The Empty City” really happy? Every human heart is different, and humans can mask their emotions. Will Atashi be able to find happiness for her and the person meant for her?
A Hopeless Dream
first shown: Chapter 34
In the new town, there are as many of “those” as there are people. But wait! A human reaches their hand down to Atashi and takes her home with them. Could this person be her one and only or did they take her because she is “it” and can make their dreams come true. But there is one dream she can’t make come true.
Little By Little
first shown: Chapter 39
Atashi’s human shares all their experiences with her. But if their space gets too close will it happen again like last time? But this person is different, all people are different. She wants this person to be the one, she wants to stay there. Soon “it” will come to bother her person. If she becomes bifferent little by little, it may be better to lose the most important thing, but what is the “most important thing”?
Looking for Myself
first shown: Chapter 51
Atashi finally seems to have found the one for her in this book. She is glad she doesn't have to do what happened last time. This is because this person likes her because she is herself. She has found it because he is differnent from everyone else, and she wishes that he will like her too.
